When it comes to creating a pet probiotic brand, the threshold is not just high but also not low. There are numerous products on the market, but not many of them can withstand scrutiny. Before selecting products, formulating formulas, and designing Packaging, brand owners must fully understand several core concepts - strains, CFU (Colony Forming Unit), prebiotics, digestive enzymes, as well as storage conditions and expiration date labels. This article is designed to help you clarify these matters.

1. Strains: Not all "probiotics" are the same

Many brand owners immediately ask "How many strains do you have?" This is a misconception. The value of probiotics does not lie in the quantity,but in whether the strains have a clear identity.

The professional approach is to label the full name and number of the strain, such as *Enterococcus faecium* NCIMB 30183, *Lactobacillus acidophilus* NCIMB 30184. Having a number means that the strain's origin can be traced and there are research data to support it, rather than just mixing up some probiotic powder and calling it done.

Common strain genera in canine products include: Lactobacillus (e.g., Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei), Bifidobacterium (e.g., Bifidobacterium animalis, Bifidobacterium longum), as well as Enterococcus, Streptococcus thermophilus, etc. Different strains have different acid tolerance, colonization ability, and affinity for the canine digestive tract. The formula design should be targeted rather than simply "using human probiotics and applying them."

2. CFU: The "True" and "False" of Live Bacteria Count

CFU (Colony Forming Unit) represents the number of live,capable of reproducing microorganisms in the product. Brand owners should be aware of a harsh reality: The labeled CFU does not equal the CFU in the intestinal tract.

A test conducted in 2026 showed that the average survival rate of 60 mainstream pet probiotics in simulated gastrointestinal environments was only 31.7%. This means that products labeled as "100 billion" may actually reach the intestinal tract with less than 30 billion.

Therefore, when reviewing the factory, brand owners should not only look at the CFU value of the raw materials, but also pay attention to the factory inspection value and retention rate after accelerated experiments.

3. Prebiotics: The "Food" of Probiotics

Prebiotics are the "food" for probiotics. Common examples include fructooligosaccharides (FOS), inulin, and arabinogalactan. Their function is to selectively promote the proliferation of beneficial bacteria and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria.

A common mistake is to view prebiotics and probiotics separately. A good formula should allow the two to work together: Prebiotics provide the nutritional basis for colonization and reproduction of probiotics, rather than simply "1+1" stacking. When reviewing the formula, brand owners should confirm whether the types and addition amounts of prebiotics match the strains - different strains have different preferences for carbon sources, and not just adding inulin randomly is called "synbiotics."

4. Digestive Enzymes: The "Auxiliary Players" That Are Often Ignored

Canine probiotic products often contain digestive enzymes such as amylase, lipase, protease, etc. Digestive enzymes do not replace probiotics, but help break down large-molecule nutrients in food, reducing intestinal burden, and creating a better working environment for probiotics.

However, digestive enzymes are also active ingredients and sensitive to temperature and humidity. When coexisting with probiotics, it is necessary to confirm the labeling method of enzyme activity units and the stability data of different enzymes within the shelf life. 5. Storage Conditions and Expiry Date Marking: The Most Easily Forgotten "Life-Saving Line"

Probiotics are living microorganisms, and the storage conditions directly affect the quality during the shelf life.

Temperature and humidity are the two major killers.

For every 5℃ increase in storage temperature, the decay rate of live bacteria increases by 12%-18%. Most canine probiotics are recommended to be stored at room temperature (not exceeding 25℃) in a cool and dry place, avoiding direct sunlight. When the relative humidity exceeds 60%, the number of live bacteria in powder probiotics can drop by 37%-45% within 6 hours after opening.

Formulation Differences Are Obvious

Powder (strip packaging/bagged): Convenient to operate, suitable for mixing with food, but prone to moisture after opening. It is recommended to make independent small packages, with a single dosage per package.

Capsules: Good sealing, strong moisture resistance, with a relatively high retention rate of live bacteria at room temperature, but some dogs may not like to swallow them.

Tablets (chewable tablets/prescription tablets): Good palatability can be achieved, but the high temperature and high pressure during the tablet production process cause significant loss of live bacteria, requiring special protection measures in the process (such as low-temperature pressing, coating technology).

The Key to Expiry Date Marking

When the brand marks the expiry date on the product packaging, what the brand needs to ensure is that the CFU value can still reach the promised level at the expiry date, rather than the factory value. This requires conducting accelerated stability experiments and long-term retention observation during the formulation design stage. Third-party test reports should cover the live bacteria retention curves of the finished product under different temperature and humidity conditions, rather than just providing a raw material COA.
